︎︎︎”INTERNET AND WATER. Decolonizing technology”

jun 24,2022

Juan Pablo Pacheco Bejarano* shared with us his research around the historical, poetic, and material relationships between water and technology. First we had a screening of his video essay "El punto azul" (19:09 min), which uses original and appropriate material to weave a story between the Internet Archive, the ocean, Silicon Valley, the library of Alexandria and astronomical images, in order to address the entanglement between technology, water cycles and the production of knowledge. Then, he shared with us his most recent project about the colonial and mythological history of the internet, based on an investigation in Conil de la Frontera, where Atlantis-2, the first submarine cable to create a direct connection between Europe and South America, landed.

*Juan Pablo Pacheco Bejarano (Bogotá, 1991) is a visual artist and writer whose research investigates the historical, material and poetic intersections between technology and the biosphere. Through texts, videos and web projects, his work dives more specifically into the decolonial options that emerge from the profound relationships between water, the internet and telepathy. Juan Pablo has also produced transdisciplinary and collaborative laboratories, which seek to promote critical appropriation and experimentation with diverse digital and analog technologies. His work has been disseminated and developed in Spain, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Colombia, United Kingdom, China, Senegal, Canada and Uruguay.
