︎︎︎URBAN MUTATIONS. An approach to gentrification processes in Vallekas.

1 December 2022 to 5 February 2023

This residency project by Sergio Cabrera (ESP)* aimed at threading together discourses from the peripheries of the image that would confront and image that would confront and encourage debate on the debate on the problems of gentrification gentrification, generating a critical reflection on these processes in the different neighbourhoods of Vallecas.

In recent years, we have witnessed a gentrification of the peripheral and historic neighbourhoods of many European cities where urban sprawl is pressing.
urban sprawl of a neoliberal nature, causing spatial, economic and social imbalances.
spatial, economic and social imbalances. This is the case of Vallecas, a humble, working-class and protesting area located on the outskirts of Madrid, which is currently becoming a focus for developers, construction and real estate companies, as well as for businesses aimed at higher-income segments of the population.

From a processual practice, research and production of work was carried out in three phases: a first phase of research and documentation on some examples of gentrification; a second phase of sharing and relating the research and documentation with neighbourhood collectives and associations to consolidate this research; and a final phase, which was divided into three phases; and a final phase dedicated to the visual production of the results, materialising pieces as a consequence of the process. The idea was to create other paths, possible anthologies and new maps from which to tender images, experiences and experiences born of the fissures in the system.

Sergio Cabrera (ESP)* He holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is currently studying for a Master's degree in Visual Arts and Multimedia at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. He has collaborated with different entities, collectives and artists at national and international level. She tries to reclaim spaces that are not considered by the system and turn them into spaces for criticism, reflection or relationships between individuals. He works mainly in the context of urban peripheries, working class and marginal neighbourhoods. He questions the limits of these, how they are determined and how they could be determined, leading him inevitably to the physical and virtual experimentation of space. The recurring elements in his works are images, maps, drifts, the territory travelled, social movement and history, together with all the connections, transversalities and divergences that appear between them.
